G-6 Tourney: Kotoko Beat Wa All Stars 2-0

kotoko-all_stars-g-6_Emmanuel Gyamfi and Obed Owusu scored in the 55th and 67th minutes respectively to help Kotoko win their second and final group match of the 2016 G-6 tournament, opening up a semi-final challenge against Hearts of Oak on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

While Emmanuel Gyamfi scored with a right hooker in the 55th minute following a perfect through pass from Prince Acquah, Obed Owusu added the second in the 67th minute, hitting the belly of the roof of the net from close range in a seemingly goalmouth scramble.

Coach Michael Osei made two changes to his starters against Bechem United, bringing on Abeiku Ainooson at center back and Dauda Mohammed in attack. It was the visitors that started on a brighter note through Khalid Mumuni whose strike, after coming head-on with Ernest Sowah, was brilliantly saved by the Kotoko goalie.

Kotoko came into the picture afterwards. Dauda Mohammed was denied the opener when All Stars’ goalie, Rashid Seidu saved his blistering shot from edge of the penalty box. Prince Acquah’s goal-bound shot was blocked in the 29th minute, shortly before Emmanuel Gyamfi connected Dauda Mohammed’s incisive pass straight at the goalkeeper.

Dauda Mohammed strained his thigh enroute to laying that pass. He was as a result replaced by Isaac Quansah shortly before the interval. Having neutralised the opponent’s midfield, the Porcupines piled pressure on the visitors whilst their defencemen looked untroubled in the first half.

Kotoko returned from recess with a renewed spirit, and their hard work was rewarded in the 50th minute when Emmanuel Gyamfi ran through All Stars’ defence to shoot Prince Acquah’s through pass over the on-rushing goalie. Prince Acquah was denied the second goal five minutes later when his strike was ruled offside.

Kotoko did not relent. The cheers of admiration for their play from the supporters, spurred them on as they caused more troubles for the Wa lads. Eventual man-of-the match winner, Ahmed Adams sent a long boot into the Wa All Stars’ territory; Eric Donkor released Emmanuel Gyamfi whose intended pass was intercepted to corner.

Yahaya Adranani attempted to head away the resulting kick but his efforts could not take the ball from the penalty box. Prince Acquah directed a pass to Isaac Quansah but pounced on the ball on the way. His shot went through the hands of the diving Rashid Seidu before it hit the belly of the net to make it 2-0.
